July 18th 2008 - Separate Entrance Test for UK Universities increase student financial burden.
Source - UUK/BBC
It has been revealed in a UUK (Universities UK) report that one in seven UK universities are requiring prospective students to sit separate entrance tests on top of their A-Level exams. The tests have been widely considered to further increase the financial burden of University study in the UK on students from poorer backgrounds. The report states that it leads to "an undesirable (and profitable) industry that would provide coaching for those who could afford it". The tests require separate preparation to the public examinations, and in turn students who can afford it receive private coaching specific for the tests, leaving many poorer top students at a disadvantage and further widening the barrier to participation.
The report by the UUK follows a poll by The Guardian of 100 university heads earlier this year in which many believed UK University fees would have to rise to £6000 a year to cover teaching costs in the near future.
