Under the new Tier 4 Points Based System which starts today (1st April), the UK government has announced that it is succeeding in stopping many bogus colleges from operating and recruiting international students due to the new rules being put in place.

The UK government reports that already around 460 institutions that don't make the grade have not been accepted to receive a Tier 4 License under the new arrangements.

Last year tuition fees from international students totaled £2.5 billion for the UK economy. The UK government's tier 4 rules now ensure that institutions who benefit from having international students on their books take responsibility for ensuring students arriving from outside Europe comply with the conditions of their leave to be in the United Kingdom.

The UK Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "These new measures make sure people who come here to study - and the people who teach them - play by the rules. "This new tier of the points based system allows us to know exactly who is coming to the UK to study and crack down on bogus colleges". Fulham & Chelsea College, in central London, holds a Tier 4 License and is rated as a Grade A college.
